Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 29, 2026
Smart Budget ("the app") is a personal budgeting app for Android. This policy explains what data the app handles and how. In short: your financial data stays on your phone, and nothing is sent to us.
Data stored on your device
Everything you enter (accounts, transactions, categories, budgets, recurring items, cheques, scenarios and settings) is stored only in the app's private storage on your device. The app has no server of its own and contains no ads, analytics, tracking or crash-reporting services. Android Auto Backup and device-to-device transfer are turned off for this data, so it is never copied anywhere unless you use the Google Drive backup described below.
Google Sign-In
If you choose to sign in with Google, the app receives your Google account's email address, name and
profile picture (scopes openid, email, profile). They are only used
to show which account is connected in the app's settings. They are not sent to any server other than Google's and
are not shared with anyone. Signing out removes them from the app and keeps all your local data.
Google Drive backup
If you turn on Drive backup, the app asks for the drive.appdata permission. This lets it create,
read and delete only its own backup file (smartbudget-backup.json) in a hidden
app-specific folder of your Google Drive. The app cannot see, read or change any other file in your Drive.
- The backup contains your Smart Budget data and goes directly from your phone to your Google Drive. We never receive it.
- You can protect the backup with a passphrase. It is then encrypted on your phone with AES-256-GCM before upload. The passphrase is never stored or sent anywhere.
- Access tokens are managed by Google Play services and kept only in memory for each backup or restore. The app does not store them.
Use of Google user data
Smart Budget's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google user data is used only to provide the sign-in and backup features described above. It is not sold, not used for advertising, not shared with third parties, and not read by humans.
Notifications
The app can show local notifications, such as budget alerts and reminders. They are created on your device and nothing is sent to a server.
Deleting your data
- Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage, deletes all data on your device.
- To delete the Drive backup and remove the app's access, open myaccount.google.com/permissions, choose Smart Budget and remove access. Its hidden app data in Drive can also be deleted from Google Drive → Settings → Manage apps.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
